چکیده

IP anycast provides DNS operators and CDNs with automatic fail-over and reduced latency by breaking the Internet into catchments, each served by a different anycast site. Unfortunately, understanding and predicting changes to catchments as sites are added or removed has been challenging. Current tools such as RIPE Atlas or commercial equivalents map from thousands of vantage points (VPs), but their coverage can be inconsistent around the globe. This paper proposes Verfploeter, a new method that maps anycast catchments using active probing. Verfploeter provides around 3.8M virtual VPs, 430× the 9k physical VPs in RIPE Atlas, providing coverage of the vast majority of networks around the globe. We then add load information from prior service logs to provide calibrated predictions of anycast changes. Verfploeter has been used to evaluate the new anycast for B-Root, and we also report its use of a nine-site anycast testbed. We show that the greater coverage made possible by Verfploeter’s active probing is necessary to see routing differences in regions that have sparse coverage from RIPE Atlas, like South America and China.

Review: Anycast-Aware Transport for Content Delivery Networks Published at the most recent WWW conference (WWW ’09), “Anycast-Aware Transport for Content Delivery Networks” attempts to address several challenges in utilizing IP anycast as a redirection mechanism for content delivery networks (CDNs). Typically, DNS is used by CDNs to automatically distribute load to the most appropriate edge-ser...

Mobility and QoS aware anycast routing in Mobile ad hoc Networks

Anycast is an important way of communication for Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) in terms of resources, robustness and efficiency for replicated service applications. Most of the anycast routing protocols select unstable and congested intermediate nodes, thereby causing frequent path failures and packet losses. We propose a mobility and quality of service aware anycast routing scheme in MANETs ...

Anycast in Locality-Aware Peer-to-Peer Overlay Networks

This paper advocates implementing anycast in peer-to-peer (p2p) overlay networks. We argue that anycast in p2p overlays (exemplified by Pastry, Tapestry, Chord, CAN) combines the advantages of IP anycast and existing application-layer anycast services. We show that anycast can leverage the locality-awareness embedded in existing p2p overlays. The locality-awareness of the p2p routing substrates...

Load Balance Algorithms for Anycast

Increasingly, replicated anycast servers are being used to deliver network applications and service ever increasing user requests. Therefore, the strategies used to guarantee network bandwidth prerequisites and perform load balancing across the nodes of an anycast group are critical to the performance of online applications. In this paper, we model user requests, network congestion and latency,...

Using Ip Anycast for Load Distribution and Server Location

An anycast address is an IP address that may be bound to one or more network endpoints. Unlike multicast, a packet destined to an anycast address is forwarded to any one of the hosts with this address. In this paper, we investigate how the IP anycast service can be used as an effective load distribution mechanism at the network layer. The anycast service naturally provides a client with the abi...
